The Texas Tech Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health has partnered with The National Speaking of Women’s Health Foundation to bring to El Paso the first annual Hablando de la Salud de la Mujer Conference.

History
In 2003, Hablando de la Salud de la Mujer TM, was established to empower the rapidly growing number of Hispanic women across the country.  Today there are close to fourteen million Hispanic-American and Hispanic women in the United States.
Hablando de la Salud de la Mujer TM educates Hispanic women to “make informed decisions about health, well-being and personal safety for themselves and their families,” or “educar a las mujeres a tomar decisiones informadas sobre la salud, el bienestar y la seguridad personal para ellas y sus familias.”

Four hundred fifty women attended the first
Hablando de la Salud de la Mujer TM Conference held in Los Angeles.  The program was presented in Spanish with English translation available on headset.  The program has since expanded to multiple cities.  We are enthusiastic about spreading the message of health through education and pampering across the country to Hispanics eager to take charge of their health, well-being and personal safety, as well as address the health issues that are unique to their culture.

The National Speaking of Women’s Health Foundation through the Hablando event honors women who embody the mission “to educate women to make informed decisions about health, well being and personal safety for themselves and their families” with a long-term, positive outcome.

We are currently accepting nominations for 2008 Honorees.  Women are encouraged to nominate a “Friend for Life” who has positively impacted their life in regards to their health, well-being and personal safety-with a long-term, positive outcome.  A “Friend for Life” can take shape in many forms, for example:

•A woman who supported a friend who made a healthy lifestyle change (i.e., stops smoking, lower blood pressure, or achieve target healthy weight).

•A mentor or program leader who helped educate and empower a woman to make positive lifestyle changes.

•A woman who encouraged a friend to further check out a potential health risk, and followed up.

•A medical professional who went above and beyond her professional responsibilities to help a patient through recovery.
